What is Gum Disease? When Does A Tooth Need A Crown?
Meet Dr. DixonYour dentist in Pompano Beach, FL, Dr. Camille Dixon, may recommend a crown or cap on a tooth for many reasons. The most common reasons a crown would be needed are:
- A very large filling that can no longer be refilled.
- The tooth is at risk of breaking due to a large filling.
- A tooth that has undergone a root canal.
- The tooth is painful, sensitive to biting, and diagnosed with fractures.
- A tooth that is broken in such a way that a traditional filling cannot restore it.

What’s Involved In Getting A Crown?
Getting a dental crown typically involves two appointments. During the first visit, the tooth is prepared for the crown. Dr. Camille Dixon will reshape the tooth to make space for a stronger, permanent crown and remove any unhealthy, decayed, or compromised tooth structure. After the preparation is complete, a detailed impression will be taken and sent to the dental lab where your final crown will be crafted.
In the meantime, a temporary crown will be placed to protect the tooth while the permanent one is being made. Special care is needed with the temporary crown, as it is designed for easy removal once the permanent crown is ready to be securely placed.
Fixed Dental Bridges In Pompano Beach, FL
A dental bridge replaces a missing tooth or, in some cases, several missing teeth. If someone is unable to replace a missing tooth with a dental implant, a traditional fixed bridge is an excellent solution! With a traditional bridge, the artificial tooth is anchored by two or more adjacent crowns. These crowns are placed over healthy teeth to ensure they are strong enough to support many years of use.
If you are missing a tooth and do not replace it, unfortunate changes can occur. The adjacent teeth may shift or tilt into the empty space. Additionally, the opposing tooth in the jaw may move into the gap. Therefore, it is essential to replace your missing tooth before your other healthy teeth are negatively affected!
