Spare and Duplicate Dentures

We don’t usually expect emergencies or accidents to happen, but unfortunately, they do. If you wear dentures and live in Pompano Beach, FL, we can help you prepare for unexpected dental emergencies and denture issues before they disrupt your daily life.

Common Reasons for a Spare or Duplicate Denture

  • An unplanned visit to the emergency room
  • A hospital stay
  • A stomach illness while on a cruise or boat trip
  • Dropping dentures that break and become unusable
  • Dentures that are misplaced or accidentally discarded
  • A set of dentures lost in a nursing home or memory care facility

These are the most frequent ways dentures can be lost. Most of the time, we don’t consider what we would do—or what might happen—until the situation has already occurred.

Denture Replacement in Pompano Beach, FL

Meet Dr. Dixon

And when we end up in this difficult situation, it may take several dental visits to create a new denture. New impressions have to be made, new bite records taken, multiple try-ins scheduled, and only then is the final denture delivered.

The traditional process of replacing a denture can take weeks, leaving you or your loved one without teeth in the meantime. On top of that, the dentist making the new denture has no record of the old one and must start from scratch.

The shape, appearance, and position of the new denture teeth may not be the same. Most likely, they will not fit like the denture you were comfortable with before. Adjusting to the new denture can take many months—or you may never be fully satisfied with the fit or look.

Improved Denture Replacement

You don’t have to wait any longer! Now, Dr. Camille Dixon can create a replacement or duplicate denture, often in just two appointments—and sometimes without the need for impressions. If you or your loved one currently wears dentures, having a backup can be a lifesaver if the original set is lost or broken.

Using the latest digital technology and denture design, Dr. Camille Dixon can craft a new denture that closely replicates the one you are wearing now.

And if you’d like to upgrade your current denture—with brighter teeth or less wear—that can be done too! Whether you prefer major changes, minor adjustments, or none at all, a new denture can be made to achieve your desired result.

Once a patient is diagnosed with periodontal disease, it is important to be seen for a periodontal maintenance cleaning every 3-4 months.

For someone with moderate to advanced periodontal disease, Dr. Dixon will refer you to a specialist for more specialized treatment such as laser therapy and gum surgery.  Together, a customized treatment will be created to help you achieve and maintain a return to health.

Getting A Digital Spare Denture

We now have the technology to easily duplicate and create a replacement denture for you! Your new denture can be an exact copy of your existing one. We can reproduce the same denture to match your current set—and if you are not happy with your present denture, we can make any changes or adjustments with your new digital denture.

Alzheimer And Dementia Patients

If you have a loved one with dementia, Alzheimer’s, or other cognitive changes, life can be challenging for the patient, their family, and their caregivers. Whether your loved one lives at home, in an assisted living facility, or a memory care center, their well-being is always our top concern.

For the past decade, Dr. Camille Dixon has worked with hundreds of patients facing these issues. Throughout her practice, she has witnessed firsthand the oral health challenges that arise and the difficulties involved in replacing dentures if they are lost in this setting.

Many of these patients currently wear dentures they have had for several years, if not decades. They most likely received their dentures before their cognitive changes began. All denture wearers develop muscle memory and a deep familiarity with their current prosthetics.

You may not realize it, but facial muscles and the tongue are constantly involved in helping to stabilize and keep dentures in place, especially the lower denture. This becomes evident after someone suffers a stroke. Before the stroke, there were no issues with how the dentures fit or functioned. Then, after the stroke, if facial paralysis occurs, the dentures may suddenly become loose or no longer work as they did before. Nothing changed about the dentures or the underlying bone, but the use of facial muscles and the tongue was compromised by the stroke, causing the dentures to malfunction or feel loose.

Reasons To Get A Clone And Spare Denture For Patients With Dementia

When a patient with dementia loses their dentures, the success rate of that patient being able to adapt to and function with new dentures is very low. And that’s if new dentures can even be made! Fabricating new dentures requires a significant level of cooperation and the ability to follow commands, which is not possible for many patients suffering from Alzheimer’s or dementia. The usual scenario when dentures are lost with a patient who has dementia is as follows:

  • The family is upset with the caregivers or the facility about how the dentures were lost.
  • The diet must be reduced to softer foods.
  • The patient may lose weight from having no teeth or disliking pureed foods.
  • There is a decline in overall health due to weight loss and lack of proper nutrition.
  • Difficulty arises in finding a dentist, like Dr. Camille Dixon in Pompano Beach, FL, who will come to the facility or home, as it can be very challenging for the patient to leave their familiar environment for appointments.
  • The patient is often without teeth for 4 to 6 weeks.
  • Multiple appointments are needed to make new dentures—if the patient even cooperates for impressions and bite registrations.
  • If new dentures cannot be made, the patient is left permanently without teeth.
  • If new dentures can be made, the patient often cannot get used to the new teeth because they haven’t had them for several months and lack the mental capacity to acclimatize to the new dentures.
  • The new dentures are frequently lost within the first six months.
